At CASQA's conference, Julia Watson, Mike Hannah and James Lenhart presented 'The hydraulics of flow through trash screens: Are we doing the hole thing wrong?'
This paper looks at the orifice equation and how it is being widely used to calculate the treatable flow rate and bypass capacity of trash full capture devices in California. Concern has been raised that assumptions made for the coefficient of discharge within this method overestimate the hydraulic capacity of devices.
This study investigates and compares four approaches, which validate the concern.
